Holistic Detoxification – How to Choose Between a Detoxification Program and a Cleansing Program!
Is there a difference between detoxification and cleansing? Some people might say semantics, others will say they are the same thing and those in the health care profession will immediately state, there is a huge difference between the two. I would like to really delve into the differences between the two here, as this is springtime and lots of us do detoxing or cleansing programs this time of year.
If I were to make the response simple, I would say that you have to be in a relatively healthy state to cleanse your body. Detoxification can be done at any level of the healing process as long as the program does not promote or send the client into a strong healing crisis. This is a huge distinction when you consider the state of health of people with chronic, degenerative disease. They are not healthy enough to do a cleansing program, however, they are certainly able to do a detoxification program.
As a traditional naturopath I would never put a sick person on a cleanse or cleansing program, however, I would put them on a detoxification program, in fact, detoxification is not only the corner stone of any traditional naturopathic program, it is essential. Detoxing the cells is a most important process as; the cells replicate themselves and renew both themselves and the future tissues of the body. Holistic Detoxification
Let us identify the difference between the two.
Cleansing
Uses primarily liquids in the form of juices, broths and soups, water, and lemonade and some blended vegetables. Some solid fruits and vegetables are allowed, but primarily cleansing involves more liquids than solids. There is semi-fasting involved, especially when you are at the mid point of a cleanse. Colonics or enemas are involved and no animal proteins, nuts or grains are allowed. A colon cleanse as an example would also involve, the use of specific substances such as Bentonite, Psyllium, concentrated greens, such as wheat grass or barley grass.
Cleansing was all that was needed over 100+ years ago, as our environment was not overloaded with toxic chemicals. Our water was clean, our air was clean, and our food was whole and natural. Today is another story. Cleansing can be done after a good and thorough detoxification program. You need to be relatively healthy or monitored closely to do a cleansing program.
