Drug Test Detoxification – How Drug Testing Works
Drug testing with drug test kits of all types is a routine part of employment procedure in the workplace, due to federal safety regulations, as well as professional sports’ mandatory testing of athletes for performance-enhancing drugs. As it has become an increasingly pervasive part of modern life, more and more people have had to “run the gauntlet”, so to speak, which entails, usually, being subject to a “laboratory test” which collects and analyzes urine, sweat, blood, hair, saliva, and even fingernail clippings. Drug tests are officially divided into federally mandated and general workplace or home tests, and consist of several other “sub-types”of tests, including diagnostic screening, pre-employment, random, and post-incident tests.
Most people will be tested with what’s known as a NIDA 5 (National Institute on Drug Abuse) or SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) five panel test kit, consisting of a paper strip, which tests for “the big five” – cocaine, methamphetamine, THC, opiate, and PCP. If the test comes up positive, the sample is then sent to another lab for a GC/MS (Gas Chromography/Mass Spectrometry) analysis and “quantitative verification”. If the test comes out negative, it’s reported negative and never sent on for GC/MS testing. Another common type of drug testing kit is hair follicle testing, or “follicle screen”, where the lab techs will take about 1 ½ inches of hair for a sample, standardized to a 90-day history. They can and will take a hair sample from anywhere on the body, if the head is shaved. These tests are much harder to fool than the NIDA 5 ones. Drug Test Detoxification
Also, random drug testing is a regular occurrence in a number of different work places – most notably those in industries such as construction, or any that involve operating heavy machinery or being in public service (anything from forklifts on up to airplanes). It is important for drug users (who wish to keep their jobs) to know that these random tests often happen on the spot, and you are required, in most cases, to go immediately to provide a urine or hair sample where, in many cases, the collector or tester remains in the presence of the test subject. Random testing also happens in the schools, on students participating in extra-curricular activities.
The important thing to remember here is that if you are well-informed, you need not suffer the consequences of a drug test – which can translate to losing your job and any extended insurance or unemployment benefits, if you are a regular drug user. One source has said that 99.9% of these tests would come out negative if not for cannabis/THC. Saliva test kits generally cannot detect drug use beyond a few days. If there is enough suspicion that you have tampered with a sample, a “specific gravity” test kit can detect whether or not your sample is diluted, or you may have to wear a sweat patch or be scrutinized under some other method of drug testing. Addiction is a disease that is progressive and fatal if not arrested. Most drug treatment facilities and professionals now base their treatment on the fact that if an addict achieves sobriety, the first hit or shot will take them straight back to their previous existence of obsessively and compulsively seeking drugs.
This disease leaves the sufferer living a painful existence, ruled by their need for drugs. The narcotic dependency is only a symptom of a deeper problem. The drugs are not the issue but a result of the underlying problems and the need to escape from uncomfortable feelings. No matter what the consequences, an addict will still use drugs as the compulsion to consume them is so great. This is why families are broken, marriages fail, jobs are lost, houses are repossessed and health and hygiene decline rapidly as a result of drug addiction.

These medicines must be given in metered doses by trained professionals who are experienced in coping with the detoxification process. Types of treatment centres
12 Step treatment centres are structured in different stages aimed at clients in different stages of recovery. Primary Care rehabilitation is a four week, intense programme where patients receive therapy throughout the day for their addiction. Secondary care is the next stage of treatment which allows clients a little more freedom – some allow clients to go to work or attend university but the programme has strict requirements regarding curfews and daily therapy groups which must be attended. Tertiary care offers even more freedom than Secondary care as all clients are required to work, study, volunteer or be seeking employment. The therapy groups are less frequent and curfews are later.
Extended Primary care is another type of 12 Step treatment centre which offers the same intense programme as a Primary Care centre, only without luxuries such as housekeeping, catering and laundry services, therefore keeping costs down. This allows clients to remain in the treatment programme for much longer than the four weeks which Primary care offers. It has been found that addicts who complete at least three months as an in-patient in a rehabilitation centre have a much higher rate of maintaining sobriety.
Life in rehab
Drug treatment facilities will all have different programme schedules and services but a 12 Step treatment centre will generally offer individuals counselling as well as group therapy. Individuals counselling is important in addiction treatment as it provides a safe space where a client can speak freely with a counsellor with whom they work on a regular basis. Group therapy offers clients the chance to work on issues with the help and experience of other recovering addicts in the centre and the opportunity to confront issues arising in their present situation.
The 12 Steps are an integral tool in recovery. These steps provide a recovery programme which is used after the client has left the centre and provides a stable support system and tools for coping with everyday life. Treatment centres offering long term treatment facilities, therapy, a 12 Step programme and the endorsement of a healthy lifestyle have the highest success rates in addiction recovery. The combination of these factors for addiction treatment is incredibly beneficial in helping an addict to find their feet in the world and piece their lives back together.
Drug addiction can be arrested and managed if the addicted individual is able to abstain from using their drug of choice and undergo an internal change.
